翻译为“忧郁的”、“使人悲伤的”似乎并不是特别准确，“sad、sorrow、gloom”用于描述悲伤可能更常见一些，Melancholy意思是：“deep and long-lasting sadness”程度要更深，表达一种深沉的、长久的、无来由的忧郁状态：Melancholy is beyond sad: as a noun or an adjective, it's a word for the gloomiest of spirits

聂鲁达的一首诗便很好的诠释了这个词的意境——《我喜欢你是寂静的 I Like for You to Be Still》：

I like for you to be still: it is as though you are absent

and you hear me from far away and my voice does not touch you

It seems as though your eyes had flown away

and it seems that a kiss had sealed your mouth

我喜欢你是静静的：仿佛你消失了一样

你从远处聆听我，我的声音却无法触及你

好像你的目光已经游离飘去

如同一个吻，封缄了你的嘴

As all things are filled with my soul

you emerge from the things, filled with my soul

You are like my soul, a butterfly of dreams

and you are like the word melancholy

你如同“忧郁”这个词

徐志摩在《青年杂咏》中把“Melancholy”翻译为“眸冷骨累”，是如翡冷翠般的徐志摩式翻译，悲伤又无限温柔。

青年杂咏①

　　青年！

　　你为什么沉湎于悲哀？

　　你为什么耽乐于悲哀？

　　你不幸为今世的青年，

　　你的天是沉碧奈何天；

　　你筑起了一座水晶宫殿，

　　在“眸冷骨累”②（melancholy）的河水边。
